Comment: Investigation of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Lack of the C-21- hydroxylase enzyme (the most common defect) causes an increase in 17- hydroxyprogestrone (> 15 nmol/l) and deficiency of both 11-deoxycortisol and cortisol. Also used in the investigation of infertility, being a precursor of oestrogens and androgens which are reduced when the level of 17-hydroxyprogesterone is abnormally low
