Comment: Beriberi is the disease resulting from thiamine deficiency. The cause for deficiency include inadequate intake due to diets largely dependent on milled, nonenriched grains, such as rice and wheat, or to the ingestion of raw fish containing microbial thiaminases, which hydrolytically destroy the vitamin in the gastrointestinal tract. Tea may contain antithiamine factors that have been detected in certain other plant extracts.
