Comment: Assayed in an acute hemorrhagic episode in which disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is suspected, when the level may be markedly decreased. Levels are also reduced in congenital abnormalities of fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is an acute phase protein and is increased in inflammatory conditions. It has recently been identified as a risk factor in coronary artery disease
