Comment:IgM – anti HBc is only positive with acute hepatitis B infectionn and must be positive to document acute hepatitis B. Low levels of IgM –anti HBc can sometimes present in chronic hepaitits B and can confuse the diagnosis. In these cases it is necessary to retest patients after several months (or years) to differentiate acute from, chronic infections
