It functions in the body as a carrier of single carbon units playing a vital role in the metabolism of nucleotides and amino acids. Deficiency of this vitamin causes megaloblastic anemia, low levels are found in liver diseases, hemolytic anemia, pregnancy, malnutrition and malabsorption
