Comment: HBcAb appears 5-14 days after exposure. This may be the only marker detectable in some patients during “’core window”’ i.e. between disappearance of HbsAg and appearance of HbsAb. In the absence of HBcAb and HBsAg active hepatitis B can be excluded. IgM antibody to core antigen indicates current hepatitis B infection. High levels of IgG antibody persist for several years
