Hepatitis B core Ab IgM

Normal range: Negative

Comment:IgM – anti HBc is only positive with acute hepatitis B infectionn and must be positive to document acute hepatitis B. Low levels of IgM –anti HBc can sometimes present in chronic hepaitits B and can confuse the diagnosis. In these cases it is necessary to retest patients after several months (or years) to differentiate acute from, chronic infections

Sample: serum

(Hepatitis B core Ab (Total

Normal range: Negative

Comment: HBcAb appears 5-14 days after exposure. This may be the only marker detectable in some patients during “’core window”’ i.e. between disappearance of HbsAg and appearance of HbsAb. In the absence of HBcAb and HBsAg active hepatitis B can be excluded. IgM antibody to core antigen indicates current hepatitis B infection. High levels of IgG antibody persist for several years

Sample: serum

Hepatitis A Total Ab

Normal range: Negative

Comment: IgG-HAV antibody develops in acute hepatitis A (infective hepatitis) and persists after recovery. It denotes past (clinical or sub-clinical) infection and not current infectivity. A specific antibody (IgM) may be found early, denoting current or recent infection. This may persist for several weeks after onset of infection. A vaccine is now available; antibody measurement is advisable before administration

Sample: serum

(Heparin (Anti-Factor Xa

Normal range: 0.5-1.0 IU/mL

:Comment

Determine if patients is at the desired level of anticoagulation with therapeutic doses of heparin, LMW, or danaparoid

Sample: Sodium citrate

(Hemosiderin (urine

Normal range: Negative

Comment: Positive in chronic intravascular hemolysis. Its presence indicates a significant amount of circulating free Hb, filtered by the kidney

Sample: Spot urine, fresh

Hemoglobins unstable

Normal range: Negative

(Comment: Increased Heinz body anemia (910-40% of the hemoglobin is a structurally abnormal, unstable Hb

(Sample: Whole blood (EDTA, Heparin

Hemoglobin S screen

Normal range: 60-270 mg/dL

Comment:Present in sickle cell anemia. Disorders with Hb S include sickle cell anemia, sickle trait, and combination of the Hb S gene with other disorders: a-Thalassemia, b- Thalassemia, a-chain structural -chain structural hemoglobin variants, and b-chain structural hemoglobin variants

Sample: EDTA, whole blood

Hemochromatosis gene by PCR

:Normal range

Normal: absence of any detectable mutations

Carrier status: detection of a single mutation

Hereditary Hemochromatosis or a genetic predisposition to develop the disease: detection of two mutations

(Comment: The assay covers 3 most common mutations in the HFE gene (H63D, S65C, C282Y

Sample: EDTA, whole blood

Helicobacter pylori C/S

Normal range: Negative

Comment: Culture media may include enriched chocolate, Thayer-Martin with antibiotics, brain heart infusion (BHI) with 7% horse blood, and Mueller Hinton with 5% sheep blood. The organism is microaerophilic and grows best in a reduced O2 atmosphere or in a Campy – Pak system at 35oC. Cultures are usually observed for 7 days before being reported as negative. Patch distribution of H. pylori may allow all biopsy – based tests to fail to diagnose the infection

Sample: stool
