(FSH (Follicle stimulating Hormone

:Normal range

M: 2-12 mIU/mL

:F

:State day of cycle

Follicular                : 3-20 mIU/mL

Mid cycle              : 9-26 mIU/mL

Luteal                     : 2-12 mIU/mL

Comment: Very high levels found after puberty in primary gonadal failure and in the menopause. Useful, with Luteinizing hormone, in the investigation of infertility or hypogonadism in both sexes and amenorrhea in women

Sample: Serum, state, sex, age, phase

Folate

Normal range: 3-17 ng/mL

Comment: Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin found in leafy vegetables. It functions in the body as a carrier of single carbon units playing a vital role in the metabolism of nucleotides and amino acids. Deficiency of this vitamin causes megaloblastic anemia, low levels are found in liver diseases, hemolytic anemia, pregnancy, malnutrition and malabsorption

Sample: Serum

Filaria, Blood smear

Normal range: Negative

Comment: Peripheral blood smear for Filariais. One negative result does not rule out the possibility of a parasitic infection

W. bancrofti and B. malaria have nocturnal periodicity, Loa Loa diurnal periodicity

Sample: Whole blood, EDTA

Fibrinogen

Normal range: 200-450 mg/dL

Comment: Assayed in an acute hemorrhagic episode in which disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is suspected, when the level may be markedly decreased. Levels are also reduced in congenital abnormalities of fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is an acute phase protein and is increased in inflammatory conditions. It has recently been identified as a risk factor in coronary artery disease

Sample: Na- citrated, whole blood

(Fetal Hemoglobin (HbF

:Normal range

Newborns up to 95%

Falling to 2% by third month

Comment: Increased in b-thalasemia and sickle cell anemia, hereditary persistent fetal hemoglobinemia and in some aplastic anemia. Also raised in various other non-hemoglobinopathy hematological disorders

Sample: EDTA, Whole blood

Ferritin

:Normal range

M     : 20-300 ng/mL

F      : 10-160 ng/mL

Comment: Serum ferritin is an acute phase protein. Levels correlate directly with total body iron stores. Decreased in iron overload from any cause and in many malignant and inflammatory conditions

Sample: Serum

Ferric Chloride

Normal range: Negative

Comment: Positive in ketonuria, phenylketonuria, tyrosinemia, maple syrup urine disease, melanoma. This test is not a specific test. Positive results for metabolic disorders must be confirmed by methods with higher specificity. It is mainly used to monitor diet adherence in established cases

Sample: Fresh urine

(FDP (Fibrinogen Degredation Product Plasma

Normal range: < up to 5.0 mg/mL

Comment: Increased in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) which maybe secondary to intrauterine death, myocardial infarction, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, amniotic fluid embolism, eclampsia or other disorders

Sample: Citrated Plasma, fresh

Fat in urine

Normal range: Negative

Comment: Evaluate nephritic syndrome, renal tubular necrosis, mercury poisoning, ethylene glycol ingestion (which may produce oval fat bodies), and fatty casts in the urine, evaluate bone marrow and fat embolism, which may produced gross fat globules in urine

Sample: Spot urine
